Nepotism is a term used for the practice followed by those who are in power, to favor their relatives and friends, especially by giving them opportunities in the form of jobs.

A brief history of Nepotism

Nepotism originated from the Italian word “nepotismo” which is based on a Latin word ‘nepos’ meaning nephews. In the late seventeen century some Catholic popes and bishops, since they had no children of their own passed on their legacies to their nephews.

Over the years, Nepotism has been commonly found in areas such as politics, business, and movie industry in India. For example, Indian National Congress was brought into existence by Jawahar Lal Nehru & his daughter Indira Gandhi and is now managed & controlled by Sonia Gandhi (daughter-in-law of Indira Gandhi) and Rahul Gandhi (Grand son of Indira Gandhi). And in respect of Bollywood, the Kapoor family has been ruling the industry for the time of Prithvi Raj Kapoor.

Nepotism in Bollywood: The recent debate

The Bollywood has been divided over whether the Nepotism is still practiced or not in the industry, recently the issue once again came into the limelight when Kangana talked about the same on Karan Johar’s talk show, “Koffee with Karan” and referred to him as the flag bearer of Nepotism. Since then every person associated with Bollywood are being asked to give their opinions on this topic.

Our Take on nepotism in Bollywood

According to me, Nepotism is not that bad as long as everyone (whether from inside or outside the industry) is given a fair chance to prove themselves. If star kids have the required talent & skills then they should definitely be offered the opportunities but only on the basis of their capabilities and not on the basis of their status. The term Nepotism never really existed as such, it is basically the outcome of certain people’s mindset who couldn’t make it big in Bollywood otherwise Shah Rukh Khan is known as ‘king of romance’ won’t have been so successful after being an outsider in the movie industry. Several other actors such as Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone and Siddarth Malhotra etc are part of this list.
